Barbara was born in Melbourne, raised in Sydney, and has been living in Queensland since 1980. Certainly influenced by her family's artistic leaning - her mother being a silk screen painter - she started studying fine arts. Her early interests were in colour and design and she worked in lead lighting and stained glass. She got her degree from the Queensland College of Fine Arts, and has been a studio potter since 1984.
Barbara writes, "The influences on my vessels are diverse. They span from the urban environment to the achievements of women, from postmodern architecure to the domestic interior. My vessels relate to each other in domestic scale and in their similarity with human form.
"An idea of function is just one component in the final presence of my vessels. They refer to their function and at the same time draw attention to their own rules. Sometimes they argue with themselves.
"The clay vessel presents a natural paradox, a gestalt existing between the volumes implied by form, and the values represented by the surface. It is from this paradox that my vessels speak."
