Merlin's Cape (w/necklace by Jay)
Sue moved to Mount Tamborine at the beginning of this new century, continuing to do pottery as she has for the past twenty-five years. Long an advocate of sustainable living, Sue writes: "My art is an expression of my respect for our natural ecology, fast disappearing as humans demand the control of nature, and in so doing, destroy the habitat of both flora and fauna."
About doing pottery, Sue says, "The joy of hand built clay sculpture is the serendipitous results that occur in the firing proecess, where nature has final control. I seldom have a preconceived idea of my finished article, so I like to let the material guide me, rather than try to demand control. All my pieces are individual; like snowflakes, no two are exactly the same."
Sue continues, about her background in the arts: "My father was a textile manufacturer who fell victim to the down turn of the industry in the 1950’s. However he maintained a connection by moving into textile recycling. I wasn’t aware that I had any talent in the field until I won a prize as a schoolgirl for creating a dress out of textile waste. The competition was to 'Create Something from Nothing'. I guess that was the beginning of my passion for sustainability.
"I think of myself as a design engineer, as I love the possibilities of materials and colour manipulation; whether they are fabric, fibre, clay, or landscape, in various combinations. I enjoy designing versatility and sustainability into each creation.
So each creation becomes a design adventure."
